Pleasant weather for the nine of us who walked the Sierra Vista EOP dikes
this morning. Rather quiet, except for multiple sightings of three
different Peregrine Falcons, at one point all three in view at once. There
were also multiple Am. Kestrels and one Merlin about, which may account for
the paucity of small birds out in the open. Our group tally was 64 species
at morning's end.
About half the group had the good luck to see a Sora briefly as it ran
along a dike; otherwise the vocal Virginia Rail and Soras were deep in the
cattails. Duck numbers and variety were limited, with only one large mixed
flock at Moson Road, with most of them Am. Wigeon. Spice at this
impoundment was added by a Wilson's Snipe that flew, landed, flew and
circled, landed again, etc.
A single Loggerhead Shrike, several Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and a small
flock of Am. Pipits were among the land bird highlights. As usual,
Yellow-headed Blackbirds were the most common blackbird species.
