Yesterday's AAS walk at Morningside and Zonolite, led by Gus Kaufman and me, yielded two falcons: an American Kestrel at Morningside Preserve and a Peregrine Falcon at Zonolite park, near the communication towers. There was a good showing of residents and winter arrivals, including Cedar Waxwings, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, White-throated Sparrows and Orange-crowned Warblers, and big flocks of Common Grackles and Red-winged blackbirds.
This morning at Piedmont Park, I was surprised to see an immature Baltimore Oriole in some sumac bushes near the overlook point a little uphill from Magnolia Hall and the Parking lot exit. This area has been very productive lately, with quite a few feeding flocks seeming to favour it.
