For the second time in 8 years I witnessed a sharp shinned hawk pin a hatch year male rubythroated hummingbird and kill it. The previous time was years ago in very cold winter but the weather here has been really warm.
Around 5pm yesterday, there were seven hummers all bickering right outside on the back deck, fight over three feeders and some great plants. A sharpie swooped in at a very steep angle and with wings outstretched, flew across the top of one feeder and used the holly tree behind the feeder ( about 6feet) to restrict the hummer's flight. It all happened in a split second.
