Subject: [AZNMbirds] AZ: Santa Cruz Flats - 5 Falcon day/Mountain Plovers 10/30/17
A quick loop, east to west and back east again, found the overwintering raptor population starting to pick up: RTH - 26Northern Harrier - 3Harris' Hawk - 1, surprisingly near Sunshine exit off I-10Crested Caracara - 5, two on west side near Aries/Sunland Gin Rd, two in freshly cut alfalfa field with 68 Common Ravens on Green Reservoir 1/4 mile east of Tweedy, and one west of Picacho near Green Reservoir.  All but one were juveniles. American Kestrel - 12Merlin (prairie form)- 1, Evergreen Sod Farm near sprinklersPeregrine Falcon - 1, at Evergreen Sod FarmPrairie Falcon - 5, various locations
Mountain Plovers were ringside along Pretzer between Tweedy & 2950 Rd, at least 75, probably more but the windy morning conditions caused them to fly about frequently.
Other highlights were American Pipits seemingly everywhere along with Horned Larks in all quadrants. Sparrow #s starting to rise, White-crowned and Chipping most frequently seen. 35 species total in 3 hours.  Starting to feel like winter !
Good birding to all, Claudia KirscherGlendale, Az
