Not a nocturnal bird, but could this be a Carolina Wren? Eric's description is pretty minimal, but the wren's "cheer" call might match his loud second-long staccato descending trill; and while the wren's song is usually rendered "teakettle teakettle teakettle", it's often delivered as repeated two-syllable phrases, which might be consistent with his "WEEdu WEEdu WEEdu" transliteration.
