Subject: Sparrow Bonanza, Santee Delta East, and other Highlights
Pam Ford and I visited Santee Delta East today and there were very large numbers of passerinres at the beginning at of walk. We had 30+ species within the first 30 minutes and first 100m of the parking lot. We walked along the river dike to past No Man’s Land’s impoundment and south to the creek. We had six species of sparrow; Song, Swamp, LeConte’s, Savannnah, Field, and Clay-colored and a Dickcissel. We also had 3 American Bitterns, Sora, Virginia and Clapper Rail. There was also a large number of Indigo Buntings in the area. It is the most number of birds I have seen in a while during migration in a long time in this under-birded eBird hotspot.
