This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for October 27.

A CACKLING GOOSE was at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh near Playa Vista on October 23.

A SURF SCOTER was at the Piute Ponds (on Big Piute Pond) on Edwards AFB on October 26. A letter of permission is required for entry.

A RED-NECKED GREBE continued on Lake Machado at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through October 23.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was seen flying over Ernie Howlett Park in Rolling Hills Estates on October 20.

The GREATER PEWEE at Rustic Canyon in Pacific Palisades was reported through October 22. It has most often been seen at 830 Brooktree Road. At the same location from October 21-22 was a CASSIN’S SPARROW.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at El Dorado Park in Long Beach through October 21 on the east side of the lake in Area 3. A VERMILION FLYCATCHER also continued in Area 3 through October 21.

A PACIFIC WREN was in Big Tujunga Wash on October 22.

An EVENING GROSBEAK was at the Chilao Visitor’s Center in the San Gabriel Mountains on October 22.

A LARK BUNTING continued at Agua Amarga Canyon on the Palos Verdes Peninsula through October 22. It has been by the south rim of the canyon.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was in San Pedro on October 21. Another was reported at the LA County Arboretum on October 26 (possibly the continuing bird near the top of Tallac Knoll).

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were continuing at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through October 22 (in the southeast area) and at El Dorado Park in Long Beach through October 24 (in Area 2 west of the north end of the lake.

A PAINTED REDSTART was seen briefly at the Village Green Condominiums on Los Angeles on October 23. It was in the Firewheel Tree behind unit 5343. Nearby was a SUMMER TANAGER in the bottlebrush in front of unit 5339. This is private property, but birders are welcome. Please be thoughtful of the residents.

San Clemente Island had a flock of 25 CACKLING GEESE on October 19, an AMERICAN BITTERN on October 24, a continuing YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON through October 23, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR from October 24-26, a “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO from October 22-24, a LUCY’S WARBLER on October 24, a PALM WARBLER continuing through October 26, a SUMMER TANAGER on October 25 and a SCARLET TANAGER continuing through October 22.
