This is the New Mexico Rare Bird Report for October 23, 2017 sponsored by
the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given for
private property, please call before going to ask for permission. In ranch
country, do not stray off the roads. Places mentioned in the report, a
checklist of N.M. birds, and more locations on uncommon and specialty

--Chris Roberts reported up to three (male, female, and immature) at his
Cibola County home October 6 to October 13. Contact him for more info

CURRY County:
--Parmeter and Oldenettel reported three, an adult and two juvenile,
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS at the Clovis WWTP August 19. One continued to
October 13.

GRANT County:
--Dolton reported an ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRD at his Silver City home October 18.

HIDALGO County:
--Rustay, Hertick, and Egalhoff reported a RUFOUS-BACKED ROBIN in the New
Mexico portion of Guadalupe Canyon October 21. It was found near the old
cistern and orchard.

--Webster and Rowlett reported a RUFOUS-WINGED SPARROW in Guadalupe Canyon
May 13. Up to seven were present in the canyon October 21 for Rustay,
Hetrick, and Egelhoff.

LEA County:
--Levine reported an ANHINGA at Rockwind Golf Course in Hobbs October 17.
It has routinely been seen at the only pond at the golf course. It
continued to at least October 21 for many. Please check in at the pro shop
before going to look for the bird.

LUNA County:
--Egelhoff reported an ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRD at the Mountain View Cemetery
October 14.

SANTA FE County:
--Foy reported an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW along Buckman Rd at the Rio Grande
October 21.

SIERRA County:
--Oldenettel reported hearing the GREAT KISKADEE at Percha Dam Recreation
Area September 4. It heard south of the playground. Cleary photographed it
September 21 above the dam and it continued to October 23.

RIO ARRIBA County:
--NOTE: There is a $5 entrance fee to bird at Ohkay Owingeh Lakes.

ROOSEVELT County:
--Hawksworth reported a MAGNOLIA WARBLER and a CLARK’S NUTCRACKER at the
Melrose Trap October 22.

SOCORRO County:
--CAROLINA WRENS are currently at various locations at Bosque del Apache
NWR; the 90 degree turn on the Seasonal Rd and most recently near the
Boardwalk Lagoon.
