Regarding the loon, I wonder if there are loon hybrids?

Subject: [HMBirds] Red Crossbills and Bonaparte's Gulls
I had a large flock of Red Crossbills at Rensselaerville State Forest this morning, maybe around 25 birds. Matt Young from the Cornell Lab IDed the call that I recorded as Type 1, which is the expected type in our area, but urges folks to keep recording calls as the current irruption may bring birds from other areas to spots like Southwestern Albany County.
Driving home, I stopped at the Alcove Reservoir Spillway, where two Bonaparte's Gulls were making impressive aerial dives into the water. They were both still there when I left. Also present was at least one Common Loon that was doing a solid red-throated impersonation, holding it's bill towards the horizon and showing a lot of white on the face. The bill was jet black and seemed way to big for a RTLO, though.
