Subject: no sighting; new study on value of birds and birding in Colombia
Hi Carolinabirders,

A few years ago Natalia Ocampo-Penuela and I led a group of Carolina
birders on a field trip to Colombia.

We've just published a study (out today) explaining why birdwatching
tourism is really important for the future of Colombia's many endemic and
endangered bird species and also the welfare of its rural citizens.
Colombia is going through a peace process and there's a concern that rapid
deforestation will follow as extractive industries gain access to formerly
unsafe areas. We propose bird watching tourism as a socially and
environmentally sustainable economic alternative.

You can check out the article in the journal Tropical Conservation Science
(open access):

Perhaps this will inspire some of you to plan a trip to see some of
Colombia's beautiful birds.
