A few years ago Natalia Ocampo-Penuela and I led a group of Carolina birders on a field trip to Colombia.
We've just published a study (out today) explaining why birdwatching tourism is really important for the future of Colombia's many endemic and endangered bird species and also the welfare of its rural citizens. Colombia is going through a peace process and there's a concern that rapid deforestation will follow as extractive industries gain access to formerly unsafe areas. We propose bird watching tourism as a socially and environmentally sustainable economic alternative.
