VA Birders, Last Saturday, 23 September, was the 23rd Kiptopeke Challenge (KC) run by the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory (CVWO). There were 11 teams that spent various parts of the day trying to find as many different species as possible. There were teams in all 4 categories: 24-hour, 3-hour, Special Venue and Youth. The total number of species seen by all teams was 166. Two highlights for this year were a second youth team, and a second special venue that covered the Dyke Marsh area. The KC is the major fundraising activity that helps support the avian research, conservation and educational outreach mission of CVWO. Many thanks to all participants and to those who made contributions to one or more of the teams.
