Subject: [CT Birds] Common grackles and peanuts
Just watching the backyard birds (Orange) here this afternoon - Carolina
wrens, Catbirds, Mockingbirds, Jays etc. The Common grackle took 1 peanut
in shell, dropped it into the bird bath. Went for a second peanut and put
that into the bird bath. Then proceeded to spend about 8 minutes working
and opening each peanut in the bird bath. My daughter, mentioned that she
read that Crows will drop peanuts (in the shell) into water, wait til they
soften and then eat them. Had not known that Common grackles do this as
well. Fun to watch how much effort went into this.
