Subject: [CT Birds] Townsend's NO
Several members of ARCC were able to examine photos of the possible Townsend's Warbler from Pomfret this morning. While the bird does have some dark in the auriculars, they are not solid dark as would be expected in Townsend's. As a result the bird lacks Townsend's strongly contrasting yellow arc below the eye. The bird also lacks any yellow directly below the black on the throat or further down the flanks. However, it does have yellow on the vent, a diagnostic mark for Black-throated Green Warbler. These two can present ID problems, and the observers/banders were on the ball when they documented a possible first-state record with photos that showed the hard-to-see vent.
