There are still places available for the Sunday, September 17 Pelagic Trip to the Cordell Bank.
The trip leaves at 7:00 am and returns to Bodega Bay at 4:00 pm. The leaders are Steve Howell,
Alan Hopkins and David Wimpfheimer. Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is an extremely productive marine habitat about twenty miles west of Point Reyes. Rich feeding conditions concentrates food for local breeding seabirds as well as those that have migrated here from Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand and other Southern Hemisphere regions. Birds that occur here include Black-footed Albatross, Northern Fulmar, Sooty, Pink-footed and Buller's Shearwater, Fork-tailed, Ashy, Black and Wilson's Storm-Petrel. Other species such as Sabine's Gull, Arctic Tern, South Polar Skua, Long-tailed, Parasitic and Pomarine Jaeger, Tufted Puffin, Rhinoceros and Cassin's Auklet, Red-necked and Red Phalarope also can be seen in these waters. Many rarer species have occurred here over the years. Marine mammals can be plentiful here as well; Blue, Humpback and Fin Whales have been observed recently plus Right Whale, Pacific White-sided and Common Dolphin. Pinnipeds, Ocean Sunfish, sharks and a variety of other marine wildlife are all possible. The trip is a fundraiser for the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin. Member tickets are $165, non-member $185, and a new member package deal for $200, which gains you a boat ticket, the 2-cd birding by ear set, and a one year household membership.
