Thanks to 13 participants for conducting the 11 September 2017 San Elijo Lagoon monthly bird count: Steve Brad (beach/offshore, West Basin, Nature Center); Bradley Nussbaum, Patti Koger (Pole Rd); Kathy Aldern, Maryanne Bache, Gretchen Nell (CBS= Rios to freeway); Jayne Lesley, Gail DeLalla, Don Johnson, Bill Mittendorf (EBS = La Orilla to Sta Inez); Robert Patton (EBNW = dike; EBNE = Escondido Cr; Cardiff Cove); Elizabeth Venrick, Edie Berendsen (EBE = Stonebridge Mesa).



Things were relatively quiet with the heat, humidity, & construction activity, but migration was well in evidence with northern shovelers, a white-winged dove reported along the La Orilla Trail just east of the powerlines, a loggerhead shrike along the RR tracks, a yellow-rumped warbler north to south along the east basin dike, a lark sparrow in Holmwood Cyn, western tanagers both off El Camino Real & in Holmwood Cyn, & lingering black-headed grosbeaks both locations as well. A reddish egret had been seen between Hwy 101 and the RR tracks yesterday, but not today.



89 species were recorded: pied-billed grebe, brown pelican, double-crested cormorant, Brandt’s cormorant, great blue heron, great egret, snowy egret, black-crowned night-heron, white-faced ibis, mallard, northern shoveler, gadwall, osprey, Cooper’s hawk, red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, peregrine falcon, California quail, Ridgway’s rail, sora, snowy plover, semipalmated plover, killdeer, black-necked stilt, American avocet, greater yellowlegs, willet, spotted sandpiper, whimbrel, long-billed curlew, marbled godwit, sanderling, western sandpiper, least sandpiper, dowitcher sp., Heermann’s gull, ring-billed gull, California gull, western gull, Caspian tern, royal tern, tern sp., rock pigeon, Eurasian collared-dove, mourning dove, white-winged dove, white-throated swift, Anna’s hummingbird, Allen’s hummingbird, Allen’s/rufous hummingbird sp., belted kingfisher, Nuttall’s woodpecker, downy woodpecker, black phoebe, Say’s phoebe, Cassin’s kingbird, western kingbird, rough-winged swallow, cliff swallow, barn swallow, swallow sp., California scrub jay, American crow, common raven, bushtit, Bewick’s wren, house wren, marsh wren, gnatcatcher sp., California gnatcatcher, wrentit, northern mockingbird, California thrasher, loggerhead shrike, European starling, orange-crowned warbler, yellow-rumped warbler, common yellowthroat, western tanager, black-headed grosbeak, spotted towhee, California towhee, lark sparrow, Belding’s savannah sparrow, song sparrow, red-winged blackbird, brown-headed cowbird, house finch, lesser goldfinch, American goldfinch, house sparrow, scaly-breasted munia.
