In spite of the heat and high humidity, the monthly San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary count volunteers persevered today (Sept. 1). The best bird was a Willow Flycatcher on Pond 5, followed by 9 Japanese White-Eyes in the riparian area. Bell’s Vireos were very active and singing loudly, including at least one by the parking lot by the bookstore. There were 12 Bell’s Vireo in total at the Marsh. The partially leucistic California Thrasher was again seen in its usual spot. Caspian Terns were everywhere, including 23 on Pond 1 alone.
