Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Goose Pond FWA shorebirds Hudsonian godwits
Don Gorney and I counted 576 shorebirds of 15 species at Goose Pond FWA today. Highlights were a buff-breasted sandpiper and 3 Hudsonian godwits in MPW. See checklists for detailed notes and some photos.

Comments: Disturbance a water level l. Parked at east parking lot and hiked west toward mudflats. Goose Pond FWA staff have mowed a path from this parking lot out to the mudflats! This was wonderful as we didn't have to walk through tall wet vegetation. I think this path, which also goes through cattails where they meet up with mud, would be worth checking for Nelson's sparrow in October.

Comments: Disturbance b water level n. A Hudsonian godwit was first reported by Lee Sterrenburg and party on August 27. Today we were thrilled to see a total of 3 HUGO in the unit. How AWESOME is it that Goose Pond FWA is again hosting Hudsonian Godwits for multiple days?!? This is a species that is well known for making non-stop migratory flights from Canada to South America. Most Indiana records are from the lakefront when they fly over and keep going. Staging areas inland are rare. Goose Pond is a gem for these tired and hungry migratory shorebirds and for those of us that like to see them.
22 species (+1 other taxa)

Wood Duck 45
Blue-winged Teal 66
Double-crested Cormorant 31
Great Blue Heron (Blue form) 84
Great Egret 85
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
Black-necked Stilt 8 Exact count, adults and juvs
Semipalmated Plover 1 Exact count
Killdeer 27 Exact count
Hudsonian Godwit 3 Exact count. All adults in mostly basic (transitional) plumage. Slightly larger than greater yellowlegs but much bulkier. Long, slightly upturned bill was dark towards tip and orangish near base. Scapulars and mantle solid plain gray (basic). Tertials and outer wing coverts patterned (retained alternate plumage). Breast solid plain buffy-warm gray. Belly with very few scattered rufous (retained alternate) feathers. First bird had significant black barring around the vent area. Fewer alternate undertail coverts retained in 2nd and 3rd birds (not as obvious but still visible from a distance). 3rd bird had the most retained rufous belly feathers (visible in photos). Only the first bird was seen in flight: Dark upperwings with narrow white stripe. Black axillaries and underwing coverts seen in flight. Black tail contrasting with white rump. Very poor distant photos obtained of the first bird. Better photos of the last two birds. No flight photos.

The godwits were seen from the east levee. The first bird was seen at approx. 38.970237, -87.165432 as it rested and foraged with a large flock of dowitchers. These birds were jumpy. The HUGO at one point did a long circling flight around MPW but then returned to the same area. About 10 minutes later, the HUGO took flight again and was seen very high heading NW over SR 59 x 200 S on a heading toward GP10N (but it was not found in this unit later in the day). The second two birds were sleeping just south of the double ditches at approx. 38.977214, -87.169154 They appeared exhausted and one or both were sleeping most of the time we viewed them. Photos were obtained of these sleepy birds where they can clearly be aged as adults in mostly basic plumage.
Stilt Sandpiper 66 Exact count, all juvs. The biggest group was at 38.966000, -87.162027 while the others were in a few groups near the first godwit
Buff-breasted Sandpiper 1 Exact count, we got lucky and saw it come out of the grass on this gravel strip to bathe. After a bath it quickly went back into the grass and disappeared. Approx. location 38.967210, -87.162167
Pectoral Sandpiper 23 Exact count
Short-billed Dowitcher 12 Exact count
Long-billed Dowitcher 0 Possible. Some dowitchers were too distant to see plumage details, but looked very plain with much gray on the breast.
Short-billed/Long-billed Dowitcher 5 too distant to be identified to species
Spotted Sandpiper 1 Exact count
Greater Yellowlegs 4 Exact count
Lesser Yellowlegs 16 Exact count
Bell's Vireo 3
