*SAS Ankeny NWR Scouting Trip Report*

Hello all -

On Saturday, July 15th, Barbara, Fred and Kay scouted Ankeny NWR in
preparation for our Salem Audubon bird walk on *Saturday, July 22nd at 7:00
a.m.* The three of them covered four locations around the refuge including
Eagle Marsh, Pintail Marsh and Pintail-Egret Marsh Boardwalk. It was 57
degrees at the start and 69 degrees at the end with fair skies and very
light breezes from the south. Eagle Marsh is being allowed to dry as last
summer and currently there is almost no standing water. During the
scouting trip they identified 52 species.

Most notable identifications:

- An American Bittern and Sora;

- The shorebird migration has begun as the group observed Least
Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers, Wilson’s Snipe, Wilson’s Phalaropes,
Greater Yellowlegs, a Lesser Yellowlegs and Killdeer.
