On Sunday morning, the 16th, there was a SANDWICH X ELEGANT TERN in a mid-sized flock of Elegants at Emory Cove along the lower Silver Strand. The bird has a blackish bill with a nice, sharp yellow tip, but there are clearly some small, dull yellow-orange blotches at the base of the bill and along the base of the cutting edge. It is in basic plumage and has a very shaggy (black) rear crown. Also one Common Tern at Emory Cove. There was a flock of 11 Surf Scoters off Camp Surf.
At the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course along Bonita Road in Bonita, there's a 'new' GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE in town, this one at the little pond along the road and immediately east of the clubhouse. No idea how long the bird has been there. Also the usual domestic, barnyard geese in residence nearby.
On Saturday the 15th, a seawatch at La Jolla produced yet 2 more southbound COMMON MURRES and the same, continuing 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS; but otherwise it was fairly ho-hum. At Famosa Slough, there was a post-breeding, migrant-type Belted Kingfisher arrival--right about on time.
