On a totally unrelated note, a friend showed me a picture of a female Mallard sitting on a nest in the crotch of a silver maple tree in her yard in Grayslake. Apparently it takes her a while to get in there but she manages. An earlier ground nest was predated and the homeowner wonders if this might be the same bird trying again with a different technique.
