Subject: [SBB] Team Fledglings SCVAS Birdathon results, 4/16/17
On Sunday, 4/16, a stellar team of young birders completed a 4-hour SCVAS
birdathon. Though I and a group of parents joined, the Fledglings
identified all of the birds themselves. They found 94 species in total.

The day started strong at Charleston Slough with the calling Black Rail!
The team also saw a Sora, enjoyed a Black Skimmer on the Shoreline Lake
Island, and spotted a Great-tailed Grackle flying over. A short stop at
Ulistac was rainy, but produced Nuttall's Woodpecker, California Thrasher,
and White-throated Swift. The final birding site was the area around the
EEC at Don Edwards in Alviso. Vaux's Swifts fluttered overhead while
Orange-crowned Warblers trilled in the shrubs. A Barn Owl gave a quick
flyby. 2 Redheads and a few American Wigeon were on A16. Several large
flocks of Bonaparte's Gulls flew over. The birding finished strong with 6+
Blue-winged Teal and a Common Gallinule on Mallard Slough.

What a bunch of great birders! It was so wonderful to be out with such an
enthusiastic, skilled, and fun group. Team members were Sergey Pavlov,
Gabrielle Baum, Ozzie Altus,
Kieran Mackey, Nathanial Joffe, Vayum & Anika Tiwari, and Mitali & Anaya

Happy birding,
Rob Furrow
