announcement to the list-serv. I have been on this particular tour and can
attest that it is INCREDIBLE. If you want to see lots of amazing Central
American birds, this is a fantastic way to do it. the Canopy Tower is out
in the middle of the rain forest and you can bird from your bedroom, during
meals....all the time actually! When you are not out and about in other

The Arkansas Audubon Society Trust, in which I serve as trustee, is seeking
to boost its endowment fund to $200,000 by its 50th anniversary in 2022.
Please help us get there and have some great birding experiences in the
process. I have raised about $5,000 for the trust doing birding tours in
Central America.

I hereby announce my 3rd Panama birding tour, for December 18-23, 2017.
Full itinerary is given below. The tour limited to 10-18 people only
(minimum 10). The focus is on rain forest birding, with only limited forays
to other habitats. We will be based at the world-famous Canopy Tower ( Cost excluding airfare is $1856 per person for a
single room with shared bathroom; $2139 per person in a double room; $2289
per person in a suite. The tower has 5 double rooms, 2 suites, and 5 single

and your prior experience in international birding. Participants must be
physically fit for slow walks up to 1.5 miles; and to climb the steep
stairs in the tower. Please also tell me of any health concerns. I
strongly recommend purchasing trip cancellation and travel medical

how to pay the nonrefundable $300 deposit to the Canopy Tower to hold your

*Full Itinerary: *

*Day 1 - December 18, 2017*
*Arrival, Orientation & Canopy Tower Observation Deck*
Depart to Panama. Light meal on arrival at Canopy Tower. Upon arrival at
the airport, you will be met by our driver who will transfer you to the
Canopy Tower, located at the top of Semaphore Hill in the rainforest of
Soberanía National Park. A member of our staff will greet you as you arrive
at the Tower, and you will be provided with an orientation on the use of
the facilities. At this time we will answer any questions you may have. As
your luggage is being ferried to your room, you may visit the dining/bar
area and enjoy a refreshing drink. We highly recommend that you spend some
time on the Observation Deck. The view from the platform is incredible!
Here, you get a unique eye-level perspective of the rainforest canopy. Many
birds, including toucans, parrots, tanagers of various types, hawks, and
dozens of others, as well as 2 species of sloths, monkeys and other mammals
are commonly seen. From this vantage point you can also see ships
transiting the Panama Canal, the majestic Centennial Bridge and miles of

*Day 2 – December 19*
*Canopy Tower & Semaphore Hill Road*
Your guide will be waiting for you at the Observation Deck for early
morning birding. While you look for birds you can enjoy hot coffee, tea and
orange juice. After breakfast, at mid-morning, you’ll start exploring
Soberanía National Park by taking a pleasant walk down Semaphore Hill Road.
This winding, shady paved road, festooned on the shoulders by wildflowers
of many types, is a little more than a mile long and crosses a large creek
about half-way down. The bird list here is extensive, your morning bird
list will be impressive, as we catch a ride back just in time to enjoy a
delicious lunch at the CANOPY TOWER.
*Summit Ponds /Old Gamboa Road (10 min. from Canopy Tower)*
In the afternoon, we will explore Old Gamboa Road and the associated ponds
at Summit. These are great places to find Canal Zone birds of many types.
This road passes through a variety of habitats and has plenty of
specialties. Dinner at CANOPY TOWER.

*Day 3 – December 20*
*Pipeline Road Entrance (20 min. from Canopy Tower)*
After breakfast you board the Birdmobile or the Rainfomobile, both open-air
vehicles, that take you to Pipeline Road, the best place in Central Panama
to find forest birds, and one of the premier birding spots in the world!
Return to Canopy Tower for lunch and an afternoon siesta or adding to your
species list whether bird or mammal. Prepare for a relaxing dinner.

*Day 4 – December 21*
*Plantation Trail (5 min. from Canopy Tower)*
After breakfast, we take a short ride to the bottom of Semaphore Hill to
Plantation Trail, one of our premier birding areas. This easy trail passes
through mature rainforest and follows a small creek (Rio Chico Masambi).
Return to Canopy tower for lunch and dinner.

*Day 5 – December 22 *
Leisure day or optional tours (not included in cost). You can decide after
you get there.
