In the early 90's a White-throated Sparrow overwintered in my yard. Come spring, it began singing and collecting nesting material. I never saw it cavorting with another bird and curiously watched it exhibiting nesting behavior over a several day period. One day it was simply gone and I don't know what became of it.

Subject: [obol] singing White-throated Sparrow in SR Portland

A White-throated Sparrow is singing in the overgrown back yard on Haig, east of Milwaukie Avenue. I don't believe I've ever heard the species sing in my native state. My parents were birdwatchers in New England before I was born. They always led me to believe White-throated Sparrows were out of range in Oregon. My mother told me they were known as "Peabody birds". She would have turned 81 today if she were alive.
