David Moon and I led Joppa's Wednesday Morning Birding program today, first to Common Pasture on Scotland Road and then on to Plum Island. We were rewarded with a number of FOY migrants and had a thoroughly enjoyable morning. Skies ranged from partly cloudy to overcast; temps in low 50s; and a light onshore breeze.
Scotland Road & environs -- Canada Goose - a few. American Wigeon (4) - 2 pr. American Black Duck (2) Green-winged Teal (~ 30) Wild Turkey (1) Killdeer (4) Greater Yellowlegs (4) Wilson's Snipe (~ 20) - note, during earlier scouting visit -- ~ 0815 -- there were a good 50 to 70 snipe. Mourning Dove Blue Jay (~ 7) American Crow Tufted Titmouse (~ 7) - various, including en route to and from pasture. American Pipit (1) Song Sparrow (2) Red-winged Blackbird - common.
Plum Island (Parker River NWR) -- Canada Goose - common. Mute Swan (4) - family group: 2 ads, 2 yrlgs; main panne. American Black Duck - common, but numbers dwindling. Mallard - some. Green-winged Teal (6) - Bill Forward Pool. White-winged Scoter (4) - one ocean. Black Scoter (2) - one ocean. Long-tailed Duck (~ 10) - one ocean. Bufflehead (6) - BFP & adjacent tidal pools to west. Red-breasted Merganser (3) - main panne. Wild Turkey (2) - roadside, small pannes. Red-throated Loon (1) - one ocean. Common Loon (3) - 1, one ocean; 2, PI Sound. Pied-billed Grebe (1) - BFP. Horned Grebe (1) - one ocean, in breeding plumage. Red-necked Grebe (2) - one ocean. Double-crested Cormorant (~ 8) - various. Great Blue Heron (1) - flying n. over boat ramp marsh. Great Egret (7) - various. [Turkey Vulture (1) - on ground in marsh, across tpk. east end of PI Airfield.] Osprey (2) - Pines nesting platform. Northern Harrier (1) - female, hunting North Field. Piping Plover (1) - one beach. Killdeer (3) - pr, main panne; 1, North Pool dike. Greater Yellowlegs (5) - various. Pectoral Sandpiper (4) - small panne s. main panne (thx MaryMargaret, Tom, & Dave). Purple Sandpiper (~ 15) - first groin n. one platform. Wilson's Snipe (1) - North Pool. Herring Gull Rock Pigeon Mourning Dove Downy Woodpecker (1) - S-curves. Northern Flicker (8) - various. American Kestrel (1) - perched S-curves before flying down. Eastern Phoebe (1) - Hellcat. Blue Jay (~ 5) - various. American Crow Purple Martin (1) - lot #1, flying w/ Tree Swallows and single Barn Swallow. Tree Swallow (~ 25) Barn Swallow (1) - lot #1. Black-capped Chickadee (1) - Hellcat parking lot. Marsh Wren (1) - heard, North Pool. Golden-crowned Kinglet (5) - Hellcat lot, entry to boardwalk. American Robin - common. Northern Mockingbird (5) - 4 in vicinity lot #1. European Starling Eastern Towhee (1) - vicinity of Hellcat. American Tree Sparrow (5) - roadside, n. main panne. Field Sparrow (2) - Hellcat dike. Savannah (Ipswich) Sparrow (1) - edge of one beach dunes, n. platform. Savannah Sparrow (1) - heard, Hellcat dike. Song Sparrow - common. White-throated Sparrow (1) - heard. Dark-eyed Junco (1) - roadside. Northern Cardinal (2) - heard. Red-winged Blackbird - common, Common Grackle (~ 12) - n. gatehouse. Purple Finch (1) - singing male, roadside n. Goodno Woods crossing. American Goldfinch (~ 10) - roadside S-curves.
