Made the trek out to the Old Northfield Rd. gate in Montague with a couple friends today. The red crossbills continue there and the puddle still attracts the thirsty ones. There do seem to be multiple groups with some staying nearby and others splitting off to parts unknown and returning after a while. At one point we had 25-30 in the air at once.
I'd be interested if anyone knows the typical timeframe when crossbills leave our area. It seems that these have already stayed late into this season.
