Subject: [ia-bird] Pasqueflower walk with birds
This afternoon at the Waterman Prairie complex in O'Brien County a group
explored the Hanging Valley wetland high above the Little Sioux River valley
targeting pasqueflowers on native prairie slopes which were found in
abundance. For those looking up instead of down three Smith's Longspurs
left the short stubble in a field along the way, an early Swainson's Hawk
soared past, and a Black-crowned Night-Heron flew to the far end of the
wetland and then gave good scope views while standing between nesting geese
on two rat houses. A pelican flock flew in, fished cooperatively and then
soared up a thermal and away to entertain the crowd. Near an old wooden
post alone on a hill owl pellet remnants were found but nothing fresh to
indicate recent activity.
