I led this morning's edition of Joppa's Saturday Morning Birding under partly cloudy skies, temps 38-43 F., and winds W-NW/10-20 mph. We visited Common Pasture on Scotland Road and Colby Pasture on Turkey Hill Road before heading for Plum Island.
Common Pasture -- American Wigeon (7) American Black Duck (4) Mallard (2) Northern Shoveler (1) - drake. Green-winged Teal (~ 24) Great Egret (1) Killdeer (5) American Crow (3) Red-winged Blackbird - common. NOTE: posted possible Eurasian Wigeon not present; not a single Wilson's Snipe seen.
Colby Pasture -- aside from a Red-winged Blackbird, no birds seen.
Plum Island -- Canada Goose - common. American Black Duck - common. Mallard - a few. Northern Pintail (2) - pr. flying north over south marsh. Common Eider (1) - drake, seven ocean. White-winged Scoter (1) - drake, seven ocean. Red-breasted Merganser (4) - 2 pr, south marsh. Double-crested Cormorant (~ 5) - various. Great Egret (4) - various. Osprey (2) - Pines platform. Northern Harrier (2) - 1, f, North Field; 1, m, North Field. Greater Yellowlegs (3) - small pannes. Herring Gull - a few. American Crow American Robin (1) European Starling Cedar Waxwing (~ 12) - fly over, Pines. Savannah (Ipswich) Sparrow (1) - wrack, Bar Head. Song Sparrow (1) Red-winged Blackbird - common. Common Grackle (2)
NOTE: * At 8:15 a.m., checked out wetland at junction of Jellison Road and Cross Street in Rowley for Eurasian Wigeon -- negative. * At 12:45 p.m., checked out Newman Road en route home -- could not locate Doug's Little Blue Heron; ~ 12 Northern Pintails and ~ 12 American Black Ducks present south end of marsh.
