Date: 4/5/17 3:09 pm From: Rick Bowes <rbowes...> Subject: [MASSBIRD] 4/5 Duxbury: Beach (Short-eared Owl, Gannets, Piping Plovers); Town Pier (2 other FOY)
4/5 11:15am: Checked Mattakeeset Court (Town Pier) and found 2 Laughing Gulls and 2 Double-crested Cormorants. Both First of Year birds for me in town.
Duxbury Beach: Wed 4/5/17 8:00-11:05am; HiTide 7:06am (10.6ft); 37F; foggy/hazy;Wind N-8; Ocean: mod surf; Bay: choppy with occas. caps. Birded entirely from car except from Gurnet east-facing lookout point.
Highlights: Short-eared Owl, Gannets, Horned Grebes in alternate plumage with one still in basic, 6 Piping Plovers (all from car); also a striking flock of 7 male cardinals at a puddle out on Saquish - don't usually see them in flocks. Also, surprised not to get any egrets as they have arrived on west side of Duxbury Bay - and somehow missed House Sparrow!
Note: SEOWs occasionally set up shop at the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary in Marshfield (not very far as the owl flies!). Birders heading to DWWS for Timberdoodles/Woodcock may want to also be alert out by the Fox Hill Overlook in case this beauty has decided to settle in and is hunting at dusk.
