Yesterday after sunset we decided to try the fields along Medfield's Hospital Road for American Woodcocks. We homed in on the nearest calling males. Two birds flew right by us, one of them disappearing over the horizon. Although apparently it was too cloudy and dark to discern any woodcock sky dances, we could hear their wing twitters and vocal chirps. One male called very close to us on the ground, allowing us to glimpse its silhouette in the grass before it took off.
