Hi all,
Ice went out on the Abagadasset River in Bowdoinham on Friday, and as of this morning, the flats at the rivermouth were about 70% open - just in time for the "Spring Ducks and Draughts" tour in our Birds on Tap - Roadtrip! series. Duck numbers have more than doubled since Friday, despite yesterday's storm.
Today's tally:600-700 American Black Ducks100-150 Mallards40 Canada Geese20 Common Mergansers8 Wood Ducks6 Green-winged Teal4 Hooded Mergansers2 American Wigeon2 Northern Pintail9+ Bald Eagles.
We also had 8 Bald Eagles, 12 Common Mergansers, and a singing Carolina Wren at Mailley Park in Bowdoinham, and our 20th Bald Eagle of the day over Oxbow Brewing Co in Newcastle.
