After trying three other times recently, I finally found the Red-naped sapsucker at Almaden Lake park, at around 9:30 am on Saturday, March 11. It was on the fourth pepper tree from the end of Winfield, right where Janna Pauser said it might be! It wasn't too high up the tree, so we got good looks at it.
There were three female and one male Common mergansers on the lake. The island was crowded with Black-crowned night-herons, Great egrets, and a few Great blue herons.
