The exceptionally large grin patch DEFINITELY makes this bird a hybrid. In many, if not most all Ross's Goose "look-a like" hybrid geese, it is the presence of a grin patch that determines if the bird is a hybrid. The size, shape & color of the birds bill also eliminate this bird as a Ross's Goose. There are still several (many?) especially eastern states that do not accept Ross's Goose records without good documentation, as there are many more hybrids out there with the large increase in both Snow & Ross's Goose populations in the past 20 years or more. As a long-time former member of the IORC, I can definitely tell you that this bird would and should not be accepted as a 100% Ross's Goose. Add it to your lists if you must, but it is not a Ross's Goose.
