Timberdoodles were regular at West 5 mile, along North Territorial and also West Joy Rd off of Whitmore Lake Road about this time year.
You could hear them from your parked car.
Herb Wagner introduced me to them down near Dundee but I also had the pleasure of sitting with Bob Storer when I worked at Saguaro Plants,
listening and watching them while discussing ferns and butterflies and birds....

Here in France, I've never heard their European cousins, but I see them during the day when panic flying, flushed by hunters.
I had one survive 3 days after being brought to the house alive by neighbors. He was full of shot and I tried my best.

I've had Timbers here in Livingston
at the oddest places! Off of I96 at the outlet mall  in
a small area next to the Home Depot on Gr River in Howell
and off of I96 in Fowlerville behind the Ford dealership

enhancement  Birdscaping
in the Midwest (Mariette
Nowalk, Univ. of Wisconsin Press) gives numerous
suggestions
for native shrubs that are beneficial to many birds,
including timberdoodles. For moderately dry
areas, consider dogwoods, hazels and serviceberries. For
wetter areas, spicebush, ninebark and pussy willows do
well.
 I usually buy these
from Wil dType Nursery in Mason, MI (near East Lansing);
they are also available from local conservation district
sales.
