Hey everyone,
Ventura Audubon is leading a trip to Belize & Guatemala next February.
We'll be exploring Mayan ruins and searching for Yucatan birds! There
are a few spots left on the trip and the deadline to sign up is now the
end of November! Feel free to reach out directly to me if you have any
questions.
Here's the link to the page with more information and where you can sign
up.

This year the Carpinteria CBC will take place on Saturday, December 14, the first day of the three-week count window. Much of our count circle is in Santa Barbara County, but a significant part of it lies in Ventura County, so I'm putting the word out to any Ventura County birders who might be interested: now is the time to sign up! :-)
Details, including a link to the signup form, are at:

Thanks for the clarification, Tina! I don't believe the first bird has been
refound, but the bird that Dave Pereksta had at Bob Kildee yesterday was
very cooperative this morning, and several of us had great looks at it. A
very handsome bird!
If I can offer my two cents: personally, I think it can be appropriate to
post information about a bird that you haven't seen first-hand,
particularly if the original spotter isn't active on this listserv or
eBird. Better to get the word out. Of course, because you aren't the
primary source, some details may get mixed up or miscommunicated. If that's
the case, then you can simply explain yourself, and I think most people
will understand. Some may be frustrated having looked in the wrong place,
which I think is a reasonable feeling. But, I'd advise against accusations
without more information. No one likes being accused of things they didn't
intend, and I believe it's good practice to assume the best intentions of a
person.
That being said, if you felt like that has happened to you in a private
conversation, this is not the forum to call that out. You can resolve that
issue privately between the parties involved without bringing it to the
general public's attention. We don't have all of the information about this
conversation, and it creates unnecessary curiosity about this private
conflict. If this conversation happened publicly on the listserv, then
that's a different story.
To be clear, I have no personal insight into this particular situation
whatsoever. So, I'm a disinterested party here commenting on what I believe
is best practice for this listserv. Others are free to disagree. Healthy
conflicts are inevitable among people, especially if they are as passionate
about a subject as we are about our feathered friends. So, let's just make
sure we have them in an appropriate manner.

Date: 11/4/24 9:48 pm From: Max Breshears via groups.io <wolfvolcanologist...> Subject: [venturacobirding] Possible Black-headed Gull - Ventura, Santa Clara River Estuary
Possible Black-headed Gull, reported on eBird as Black-headed to get the
word out. There is much discussion as to whether it is one or not, the
bill, feet and face pattern look fine for Black-headed but wing patterns
are proving puzzling. Likely better photos are needed to confirm.
Seen here: (34.23519° N, 119.25842° W)
To chase this bird I would recommend checking two locations inside the
estuary. First would be the mouth, which would probably best be scanned
with a scope. To get to the mouth I would park at the Surfers Knoll Parking
Lot and walk about a half mile south down the beach. The next area I would
check would be the backside. To enter the estuary from the backside, one
could either walk through the Ventura Settling ponds and exit out the back
trail or, what is probably much easier, park along Harbor Blvd. here
(34.23685° N, 119.25663° W) and walk down to the estuary. I recommend
wearing muck boots/clothes you feel comfortable getting wet/muddy in.

Tina and Karen --
I am sorry to hear that your participation in local birding communities felt hostile and critical. That's just not cool.
My soapbox: Birding is supposed to be fun, inclusive, and encouraging to new people. The critical people give the craft a bad name, so no wonder new people sometimes don't want to get involved! Please let's stay positive, supportive, and remember that we all love birds and nature - the things that unite us.
Here's to always lovingly teaching others -- and ourselves - about the birds we hold so dear --
Sincerely,
Linnea Hall

Dear Tina,I can’t believe some people in the birding community. So awful. This same thing happened to me. I was not a birder at the time and was a new birder. I found an American Redstart in San Luis Obispo county. The next day, after I was approved to join their county listserv, I posted what I found and its location. I immediately was chastised by a well known birder in that community for not posting the sighting soon enough. I had to explain myself! People did go to Oso Flaco and see the bird after I posted to that listserv. It stuck around for 2 days. Thank you for doing the post and letting all the polite people know. Happy Birding!Karen Rusch

I received a very accusatory email saying that I misled everyone about the location of the BTNW.
I received an email from Matt Brady yesterday asking for clarification and I double checked with my friend about the location and he clarified to me that it was on Foothill Road and it was at Arroyo Verde Park. Apparently I was told it was seen at some tams in Oxnard. Birds have a tendency to fly and there's also the possibility that there could be two of them.
Before I decided to post about the black-throated green warbler, I asked the advice of a very experienced birder, because I knew that my friend doesn't do eBird or groups and I thought it would be good for the birding community to know in case there were people interested in looking for it. However I was hesitant to post because I didn't see the bird personally.
But my expert friend gave me the advice that it is better to post it and let people know. It took me time to do the posting and I don't appreciate it when I'm accused of misleading people. Next time I will not post unless I have seen the bird personally.
