Weather: Mostly cloudy becoming mostly sunny. Moderate to strong winds shifting from northwest to southwest and weakening late. High in the low 60s.
Raptor Observations: A mix of low and high migrants. Clouds helped with spotting some high streaming Buteos.
A steady Turkey Vulture flight with over a hundred. Moderate Bald Eagle activity but only a few migrating. One harrier. A dozen sharpies and five Coops. Moderate Buteo totals with 17 red-shoulders and 11 red-tails including at least one of the 'Northern' subspecies. One migrating kestrel and one hunting Merlin.
The raptor highlight was an immature GOLDEN EAGLE at 9:30am. It was spotted distant over Hunter's Field and followed as it glided left and soared high over the notch. This was the sixth of the season and a week since the previous one.
Non-raptor Observations: 233 Canada Geese, Common Loon, 22 Fish Crows, 7 Common Ravens, Red-breasted Nuthatch, American Pipit, 9 Purple Finches, 31 Pine Siskins, 2 Rusty Blackbirds, 2,400 Common Grackles (including a 'Bronzed'), 1 monarch. https://ebird.org/checklist/S409113364
Predictions: TOMORROW: Intervals of clouds and sun. High near 60F. Winds WNW at 15-25mph. Higher wind gusts possible. Good wind direction but overly strong which may hold back the smaller raptors. Eagles and red-tails may not care. Expect moderate migration.
TUESDAY: Some morning clouds then mainly sunny. High 66F. Winds WSW at 10-15mph. Expect moderate migration.
WEDNESDAY: Sunshine and some clouds. High near 65F. Winds W at 5-10mph. Expect moderate migration. ======================================================================== Report submitted by David Brown (<davidebrownpa...>) Ashland Nature Center information may be found at: www.delnature.org
