Hi all -
This morning I taught a beginning birding workshop. I hold all the
beginning workshops over at McClellan Ranch so the new folks learn about
the Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance, let alone the great habitat found
there.
During a workshop there is a lot of time spent answering questions and
talking about birding, but we do look at the birds too. The bird feeders
are a magnet for awesome birds at close range. Here we had both
*GOLDEN-CROWNED* and *WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS*, plus one *SONG SPARROW*
came to the bird bath. Having *PYGMY NUTHATCH* next to a *WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCH* made for a great comparison. One of a few *NORTHERN FLICKERS*
observed today did land above the Nature Shop.
As we walked toward the barn we enjoyed *WESTERN BLUEBIRDS*, an
*AMERICAN ROBIN* and a *HERMIT THRUSH*. This is where we also found a
*WHITE-THROATED SPARROW*!
We took the trail along Steven's Creek and added *RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET*,
*RED-SHOULDERED HAWK*, *STELLER'S JAY* and *BUSHTIT *to our morning.
I was surprised we had no warbler activity, and we dipped on seeing
towhees.
P.S. The Environmental Education Center (EEC) also located here is open
on Saturdays from 11 AM - 3 PM so after the workshop we got to go play
with snakes and lizards!
