First off, in minor bird news, the Cocos Booby is still roosting at the Imperial Beach Pier as of today--now for weeks--and today was near the end, south side, sitting with the Pelagic Cormorants.
Given that the odd tanager at Wing Street Canyon appears to have been present this past early spring as well--from at least 30 Mar-8 Apr--at which time it was also sporting a weird orangey head and neck in alternate plumage. So the thought is that it wintered locally and was only first sleuthed as being something strange just before it departed for the season....and now it is back again. Well, the plot thickens much further: Matt Sadowski went back into eBird reports of "Western" Tanager at Wing Street Canyon and found photos of the bird as early as 22 November 2019 !!!!!
So....anyone who has eBirded a Western Tanager in late fall and winter there and has photos should re-check those photos and see if it this bird. If so, it needs to be changed from "Western" Tanager to Tanager sp. or Piranga sp. And if your report has no photos, then you still might consider changing it. Probably any "assumed" WETA record there between about mid-October and early April.
