Tweets - It was a pretty typical day yesterday at the park - Temps in the low 50's. overcast, only occasional gusts of wind, not terribly birdy.
Highlights: American Coot - We were up to at least 27 coots yesterday. They do remain in the (presumably safer) slough, rather than on the lake Sharp-shinned Hawk - Adult in trees west of the Dog Meadow Northern Harrier - One seen flying north just before 7:00 a.m. Bald Eagle - 1-2, as expected Merlin - One over the concert venue, to make a diverse collection of raptors for the day Pacific Wren - Notably numerous - at least 7-8 Pine Siskin - One or two large flocks of ~100 White-throated Sparrow - One with GCSP in the grass east of Dog Central
We had only one CACKLING GOOSE (in with a flock of CANADAs). Over the last seven years we've often had large flocks in October and early November, sometimes numbering in the thousands. Not this so far this year; our max this fall is 60, and our average 16.
Misses yesterday included Killdeer, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Shrike, Cedar Waxwing, and Yellow-rumped Warbler.
For the day, 54 species.
