Chuck, I echo people who tell you how grateful we are that you're running the list. Would you please remind people maybe every two weeks that they cannot hit reply button but just type their question and remove all the related stuff. It takes forever to go over all the repeated stuff and it makes it much less pleasant to read with my coffee in the morning. Thank you.

Its November and I don't have a feeding station up for the first time in years because bears have destroyed four in the past three years. Should I put up another one? I miss watching my bird friends. Bob Jase

It’s too early, Robert. I too am going to put up feeders, but it’s not cold enough yet, and the bears are still out and active. And once you do put out food, bring it in at night. We love our bears too, and a fed bear is a dead bear.

Bears are still active during the day as well as at night so putting any feeder out is still risky. I do have an almost perfect solution - hang a wire on a pulley from the roof to high up a tree, or between two trees, high enough they cannot reach the feeders standing fully up. Bears have been photographed hanging from a wire going hand over hand till they reach the feeder, but I reckon that's a low percentage risk. This has worked for me as long as I pull the wire high enough - they quickly get bored of not being able to reach and seldom return. Birds, squirrels and chipmunks take care of any spillage so they don't find any seed on the ground.
