I hiked most of the road this morning. It was a beautiful crisp fall morning, and bird activity was fairly good but there were not a lot of montane birds. My best on came at the beginning, before I got 100 feet down the road from the parking lot. I heard a vigorous "wheep" call, then a gorgeous male Evening Grosbeak landed on top of a burned shrub just a few feet away. It didn't stick around long but made the trip worthwhile for me. (County bird)
Otherwise, I found a few Mountain Chickadees in the conifers near the beginning of the road and further down, a flock of 5 Steller's Jays. I also heard a Mountain Quail near the top. After that, everything I found were chaparral birds. The only Nuthatches were White-breasted; the only Kinglets, Ruby-crowned, and the only Finches, Purple Finches. I located 2 Fox Sparrows in a Ceanothus thicket; they were both Sooty type.
On lower Figueroa Mountain Road, there was a large flock of Yellow-billed Magpies (25 or so) foraging right on the road surface.
