Evening Grosbeak (Northwestern or type 1) (Hesperiphona vespertina brooksi) (1)
- Reported Nov 03, 2026 06:41 by Kilian Hampl
- Allan Hancock College, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.4205418&<ll...>,-120.4205418 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407819392 - Comments: "**Very rare, irruptive. I heard but did not see a single grosbeak give loud sweet piercing “teer” calls as it flew over; sounding like Northwestern/Type 1."
Cassin's Finch (Haemorhous cassinii) (1)
- Reported Nov 03, 2026 06:41 by Kilian Hampl
- Allan Hancock College, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.4205418&<ll...>,-120.4205418 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407819392 - Comments: "**Very rare, irruptive. One continuing female bird seen associating with House finches here: (34.942647, -120.418991). Medium-sized finch with long, dark, conical bill with a straight culmen, dark eye, finely streaked brown crown, cheek, and malar stripe, finely streaked buffy malar extending around the auriculars and back up towards the eye, whitish throat, breast, and underparts with extensive dark streaking that was also rather strongly contrasting against the white base, strongly streaked brown back, dark wings and short forked tail with pale edges, dark, fleshy-colored legs and feet. Heard call once. Photos"
Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) (25)
- Reported Nov 03, 2026 06:41 by Kilian Hampl
- Allan Hancock College, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.4205418&<ll...>,-120.4205418 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407819392 - Comments: "*Very rare, irruptive. General estimate of a flock feeding in the pines here: (34.942647, -120.418991). Large reddish (males) and greenish (females) finches with distinctive thick crossed dark bills, dark eyes, brownish red (males) and dark (females) wings and short tails, and dark legs and feet. Calls heard were repeated “kip kip” vaguely similar to the introductory notes of wrentit song, which I suspect is representative of type 2, though without a recording to analyze I cannot be certain. Photos"
Edit: Following submission of the checklist, I walked to the back of the museum, heard it again, and got a recording. The animatronic dinosaurs and the creek obscure the calls a bit, but the RECR is definitely audible beginning around the 13-second mark. Sorry about the baby Triceratops, they were quite noisy!"
Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) (6)
- Reported Nov 03, 2026 08:43 by Kilian Hampl

- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.4392958&<ll...>,-120.4392958 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407821382 - Comments: "*Very rare, irruptive. H/o. Two flyover groups of roughly two and four crossbills heard calling as they flew over. Calls were repeated “kip kip kip” vaguely similar to the introductory notes of wrentit song, which I suspect is representative of type 2, though without a recording to analyze I cannot be certain."
Hooded Oriole (Icterus cucullatus) (1)
- Reported Nov 03, 2026 16:31 by Tom Beland

Orange color appears dirty, black face, neck and back. White wing bars also look scruffy or like he is molting. Doesn’t appear to be sick but just not looking as good as he did a couple weeks ago."
