Hi Tweets,
Tacoma has had a pretty special visitor for the past 2 weeks - a Rock Wren! As with many wrens, it can be quite engaging and it is a delight to spend some time watching it at close range while it picks through the rocks and crevices along the shoreline. My favorite picture taken to date was one by Sam Hain on 10/16/26 during low tide of the Rock Wren foraging next to Sea Anemone. When you’re used to seeing a bird of the arid canyons of E WA, it definitely causes some cognitive dissonance to see it on the seashore.
The bird was first seen on 10/15/26 and was still present today on 11/3/26. The location is Titlow Beach Park in Tacoma. The bird has been hanging out at Hidden Beach (which shows up on Maps) by the chain link fence at an old boat launch. Sometimes it moves a bit south along the shoreline, but it always seems to come back to the fence. If you park near the waterfront, it is a .7 mile walk North on a nice flat trail along and near the waterfront. You’ll know when you’re there because the fence starts. You can continue around over the RR bridge for a nice loop past the tidal ponds with Eurasian Wigeon.
This is also a great spot at the old Ferry landing to get good looks at all 3 cormorants at relatively close range. And maybe somebody can find us a Little Gull among the several hundred Bonaparte’s Gulls that work the Narrows. :-).
