Wanted to give an update on this 3rd Fall-Winter of visits to my garden of a male Lesser Goldfinch (LEGO); I am being positive about this coming Winter, hoping to see him as in the past two winters. He may be small, but seeing his bright yellow belly even for 1 minute, really brightens up my day.
The first time I saw him was November 21 in 2024 and last time that first year was 20 February 2025. Did not see him at all until the following fall, reappearing on 29 September 2025, occasional sightings until 29 March 2026. Then, again, no sightings throughout the rest of spring and summer.
So I was thrilled to see a male Lesser Goldfinch again this 15 September 2026.
Including that happy day and through today, 3 November 2026, I have had very short but definite sightings of him 9 times. Photos for all but one of those. Amazingly, a new record, so to speak, of consecutive days of sightings, was 4 in a row, being 24 through 27 October.
Realizing this is not a rare bird per se, except in my local area, I cannot help getting excited each time I see the little guy and wanted to let others who might be interested know to keep their eyes open when in the Edmonds area. I have no idea where he goes when he is not spending 30 seconds or a minute at my feeder!
I have been very busy and have not submitted all of these sightings and the photos to eBird yet, but I’m hoping to get that done sometime in the next days.
Cheers!
