Subject: [nysbirds-l] Manhattan, NYC - 11/2 - migrants and lingerers, incl. Royal Terns, Y.-br. Chat, warblers, etc.
Manhattan, N,Y. City - Monday, November 2nd -

Multiple Royal Terns were still occurring around the Hudson River as seen from Manhattans western shores on Monday. Laughing Gulls are ongoing for Manhattan waters, more so over the river-estuaries surrounding the island, but also appearing at Central and a few other parks thru Monday.

A long-lingering Yellow-breasted Chat was still in the same mid-Manhattan location as noted in many recent reports, to Monday.

An Orange-crowned Warbler was found at Battery Park on Monday, near the southern tip of Manhattan. A moderately late Blackpoll Warbler was noted from Highbridge Park in northern Manhattan on Sunday, by an experienced observer.

Black-throated Green Warbler has been present in the north end of Central Park for multiple days, and possibly for over a week by now, photographed again on Monday. A different - a less-marked 1st-year female - Black-throated Green Warbler was also photographed on Monday, at a plaza in Manhattan.

A Nashville Warbler was present in the n. end of Central Park to Monday. That latter species has been found at times in December, such as on C.B.C.s including the portions held within Central Park, and elsewhere in this county and this city.

Other warblers still present in Manhattan thru Monday included Ovenbird, Black-and-white Warbler, Pine Warbler, Palm Warbler, Myrtle-form Yellow-rumped Warbler and Common Yellowthroat. There is a modest chance that a few additional warbler species were and still may be lingering.

A minimum of twelve species of native waterfowl were in Central Park on Monday, and a greater number of such species were around Manhattan waters, with some American Coots in multiple locations. Laughing Gulls are ongoing. The American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads, Wood and Ruddy Ducks, N. Shovelers, Gadwalls, American Black Ducks, and other waterfowl were all ongoing at Central Park along with American Coots. Not all of these species are exclusive to the reservoir, within Central Park.

Pine Siskins and Purple Finches are ongoing passage migrants here, with some sticking around past the day of their arrivals. Cedar Waxwings are moving in fair numbers. Red-breasted Nuthatches are continuing.

At least 8 species of native sparrows, plus E. Towhee are continuing in Manhattan, with all also ongoing at Central Park, this includes Red Fox Sparrows and Savannah Sparrows along with other expected species of the season.

The most recent Monk Parakeet sighting in Manhattan may be one at St. Nicholas Park in central Harlem on Monday. A Wild Turkey has continued its residence at Battery Park at the south end of Manhattan. For the record, Gray Catbirds continue as they have each day, and as they have for over six months, in Central Park, and in multiple other parts of Manhattan.

Thanks to many observers and photographers for sightings, alerts, and reports.

Good birding,

Tom Fiore
