Swainson's Thrush (Catharus ustulatus) (1)
- Reported Nov 01, 2026 09:11 by Caleb P.
- Carpinteria Creek, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.5140259&<ll...>,-119.5140259 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407312736 - Media: 2 Photos
- Comments: "Insanely late. Possibly the latest mainland record for SB county. Uniform upper coloring (head to tail, no rufous tones), bold cream eyering and white supraloral giving a “spectacle” look, entire face and throat showed buffy wash, and diffused lower chest markings giving way to a paler lower underpart. Tail was briefly raised (first photo) as it flushed, otherwise it remained lowered. A hermit thrush was observed in same general area about 15 minutes later, which gave a good comparison. The hermit flicked its tail and twitched its wings (while the Swainson’s remained calm and relaxed). The hermit also had a contrasting reddish tail unlike the concolorous upperparts of the Swainson’s. I’ve documented a couple of very late sightings for this species in LA county this fall, so perhaps there’s a trend this year for late Swainson’s."

- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.4205418&<ll...>,-120.4205418 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407382237 - Media: 18 Photos
- Comments: "*Very rare but expected in good irruption year. Innicial flock of 3 individuals flew into a pine and then almost immediately flew out of the campus. Then a flock of 14 Ed crossbills flew in all making "jip, jip" calls as they flew into the pines. Could have possibly been more birds that snuck into the tree without my noticing. Some of the crossbills gave great views even going on the ground drinking from a puddle!! I knew that would show up here. Crossbills were in the same trees surrounding the area where the Cassin's finch are. pics tba."
