Greetings all,
It was a great day to be out birding yesterday, and several counties came out of the blocks in fine form. The table below presents data for Nov 1 (note that this will not include any additional species not yet verified by eBird review). There are two metrics here:
1) The traditional method: dividing the current species total by the all time county total 2) Instead using the average of the last five years as the baseline. This grounds the contest in recent history rather than all time, and presumably reflects the stellar efforts that counties like Belknap and Sullivan have marshaled in recent years.
Short answer: This doesn't change much, and stat guru Dan Mullarkey and I will be revisiting things a little before the next update.
Belknap and Sullivan are again on the podium, with Merrimack also off to a good start (but with less room for growth). There were some good birds found yesterday, including a PURPLE SANDPIPER in Sullivan (where was it Saturday when I was there?!?!?), continuing Baird's Sandpiper in Belknap, a nice mix of lingering birds in Rockingham and Merrimack, and who knows what else. birders are encouraged to share their NCN stories with the list!
