Subject: [nysbirds-l] N.Y. County, NYC - Sun., 11/1 - 20+ waterfowl spp., terns, Y.-br. Chat, more migrants
New York County -in N.Y. City- including Governors, Randalls, Roosevelt, and Manhattan islands, and the adjacent waters and sky -
Sunday, November 1st -

A watch west the western terminus of Dyckman Street and to and along the adjacent Hudson River in northern Manhattan produced, among many other birds, White-winged Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks, Ring-necked Duck, the latter also returning to Central Park on Sunday, Buffleheads and Red-breasted Merganser, Common Loon, Red-shouldered Hawk, and many hundreds of Red-winged Blackbirds with even greater numbers of Common Grackles on the move, as well as many more species.

Two Eastern Meadowlarks were photographed at Roosevelt Island on Sunday. Also found there were Laughing Gull, N. House Wren, Savannah and other Sparrow species, and Common Yellowthroat, along with other more-typical birds of November.

Governors Island had a number of observers on Sunday, in part thanks to those getting away from the vast crowds of runners in and admirers of the N.Y. City marathon running event. Among many highlights at Governors on the day were reports of 3 Bonapartes Gulls seen by multiple experienced observers, ongoing Royal as well as Forsters Terns, 4 Black Scoters and at least 4 Red-breasted Mergansers, double-digit numbers of American Pipits with high counts on passage of more than twenty Pipits, E. Bluebird, double-digit numbers of Purple Finches, and up to triple-digit numbers of Pine Siskins collectively noted, along with many American Goldfinches, slightly-late Tennessee Warbler as well as Orange-crowned Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Pine Warbler, also still multi-dozens of Laughing Gulls, E. Phoebe, N. House Wren, Tree Swallow, a selection of sparrows of at least 8 species including Red Fox Sparrow, and many more birds.

A Yellow-breasted Chat was still present at the narrow plaza between 41st and 42nd Streets, just west of Sixth Ave. in mid-Manhattan, thru Sunday. Bryant Park is just to the east of this plaza, and 2 Wood Thrushes were still at Bryant Park, photographed there on Sunday. Also present at Bryant Park were at least 3 Common Yellowthroats, which are among typical late-lingerers at that park, and elsewhere on Manhattan island each fall and often into winter, along with such species as Gray Catbird, White-throated Sparrow, and often some other native sparrow species, as well as chances of other warbler spp. lingering, such as Ovenbird.

Up to five Horned Larks were noted from Inwood Hill Park on Sunday. It was learned later that at least 3 separate Orange-crowned Warblers were found on Sat., Oct. 31st in Central Park, one of those three being seen well south of East 72 street latitude in an area known as The Dene, which has dense plantings of wildflowers. By Sunday Nov. 1st, there were no more than 8 species of warblers reported for all of the county, however reports from some areas may have been limited due to the presence of NYC Marathon activities for all or part of the day.

Brant have been widely noted from all around the county, and ongoing duckage at Central Park still included American Wigeon, Hooded and Common Mergansers, Green-winged Teals, N. Shovelers, Wood and Ruddy Ducks, Buffleheads and other regular ducks of that park and the season.

More than 90 species of wild and free-flying birds were found on Sunday in this county. Thanks to many observers and photographers for sightings, alerts, and reports.

Good birding,
