Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) (1)
- Reported Oct 31, 2026 07:41 by Kilian Hampl
- Pismo SB--Oceano Campground, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6265268&<ll...>,-120.6265268 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407048862 - Comments: "*Rare but regular. One presumably continuing bird seen and heard flycatching from dead pines in the recently cleared area here: (35.108169, -120.629363). Lanky medium-sized Tyrannus with large black bill, dark eye, mostly pale gray head, dark eyeline, slightly but more extensively paler throat, greenish upper breast, lemon yellow belly and undertail coverts, dull greenish back, dark wing coverts with pale edges on all feathers, and thinner (for a kingbird) tail of medium length that was entirely dark and slightly forked. The legs and feet were dark. Vocal, occasionally giving high-pitched buzzy twittering calls typical of this species. Photos"
Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) (5) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 31, 2026 07:31 by Kilian Hampl
- 410 Pecan St, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.596334&<ll...>,-120.596334 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407036044 - Comments: "*Very rare, irruptive. H/o. Upon stepping out the front door this morning I almost immediately heard what sounded like at least 4-6 crossbills calling. The calls were a series of finch-like “jip-jip-jip” notes vaguely similar to the introductory notes of a wrentit song. They sounded to me like type 2, but I hesitate to go beyond that without a recording to analyze. They quickly moved off and I left for Oceano."
Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 31, 2026 09:08 by Andrew Fleming🦉
- Pismo SB--Oceano Campground, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6265268&<ll...>,-120.6265268 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S406969309 - Comments: "Seen near a mixed species flock of chickadees, kinglets, and bushtits in the native garden area, around here: (35.1084097, -120.6275496). Creeping along branches and down tree trunks like a nuthatch. Warbler with black and white striped head, face, back and chest. Male due to black patches on throat. No yellow patch near eye and more extensive black and white striping rules out Black Throated Grey."
Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia) (2) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 31, 2026 07:41 by Kilian Hampl
- Pismo SB--Oceano Campground, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6265268&<ll...>,-120.6265268 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407048862 - Media: 2 Audio
- Comments: "*Rare but regular. Two similar HY males/AHY females seen and heard with one bird part of a mixed flock along the trail just north of the peninsula here: (35.108868, -120.627061) and another loosely associating with a mixed flock on the Norswing drive trail north of the main entrance here: (35.111715, -120.625876). The first bird was silent and was last seen by me (apparently other folks saw this bird again later near the native garden) moving with the mixed flock towards the native garden. The second bird was relatively vocal and last seen flying in the direction of the maintenance road. These were both small lanky warblers with thin and slightly curved mostly darker bills, dark eyes, black and white striped crowns, grayish cheeks, white throats, white underparts with moderate black streaking on flanks, breast sides, and undertail coverts, black and white striped backs, mostly darker wings with dark primary coverts and white double wingbars, bold white tertial edges, largely darker tails, and dark legs and feet. Both birds crept along branches like a nuthatch or wren as is typical of this species. As mentioned previously, one of these birds was vocal, giving sharp husky chip calls. Photos of both birds and a recording of one bird tba."
Orange-crowned Warbler (Channel Is.) (Leiothlypis celata sordida) (2)
- Reported Oct 31, 2026 07:41 by Kilian Hampl
- Pismo SB--Oceano Campground, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6265268&<ll...>,-120.6265268 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407048862 - Comments: "*Expected, both presumably continuing with one in the native garden and the other at the redstart nesting location. Large dusky OCWAs with large bills, greener supraloral, variably greener upper and paler lower eye arcs, one bird with an obvious “large-headed” appearance, diffusely streaked breast with a slight “vested” appearance, and slightly brighter green undertail coverts extensively streaked olive (>50%). One bird heard giving thick, lower-pitched metallic chip calls typical of this subspecies/type. Aware that sordida now intergrades with lutescens in southern California, but these birds were all straightforward sordidas (at least from a phenotypic perspective). Photos tba, see media notes for additional comments."
Bay-breasted Warbler (Setophaga castanea) (1)
- Reported Oct 31, 2026 07:41 by Kilian Hampl
- Pismo SB--Oceano Campground, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6265268&<ll...>,-120.6265268 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S407048862 - Comments: "**Very rare. Probable HY male seen only briefly but well in the canopy of the small pines near the amphitheater here: (35.109917, -120.628548). This was a relatively large new world warbler with a small darker grayish bill, dark eye, green head and back, unmarked buffy greenish breast, and paler buffy underparts. There was a very obvious extensive reddish brown wash on the flanks extending up almost to the sides of the breast. The wings were long and were mostly dark gray with bright white double wingbars. In contrast, the tail was relatively short. The legs and feet were dark and lacked the orangey/yellowish soles of Blackpoll. If this bird vocalized I did not hear it. Bad photos tba"
