CT Birders -
Our community garden harvest contest is over for this year and the results are in...!!
Be it known to all that Bauer Farm in Madison is our winner, with 99 species observed during October.
At least two regional rarities were found at garden-containing hotspots this year: On October 15th, Nick Bonomo found a SEDGE WREN at Veteran's Park in Wallingford. And just yesterday, Mike Rosano found a Red-headed Woodpecker at Westmoor Park in West Hartford. It's also impressive that a DOZEN community garden hotspots tallied 60 or more species this year - that's great diversity and a lot more birds found vs. previous years.
I also noted that Coogan Farm Nature and Heritage Center in Mystic, a new hotspot in our contest, rocketed all the way to third place with an impressive 79 species of birds found. It makes one wonder how many other great local patches, teeming with birds, are out there just waiting to be explored? Get out of the big state parks and check out a local hotspot to see what you can find!
Please share your experiences; your favorite bird, a patch first, or even notable misses - anything that may interest others in our community!
