Michael and I went to Bell Slough WMA (South) this morning, hoping to find sparrows.
The WMA crew has done a tremendous job on the Moist Soil Units there, and we can only imagine how good it will be for ducks when we get enough rain.
As we walked along the center levee, we found many sparrows. Most were Swamp, Savannah and Song, but as we got further out, we found some little skulkers who blessed us with sitting in the open long enough for an ID and some photographs. One looked a little different so we waited until we got home to review the photos. Yep, definitely different, so we sent a photo to Kevin Krajcir to confirm. It was indeed a Henslow's, which we haven't seen out there since 2020. Checklist below.
Sunday, November 1, marks the seasonal closure to waterfowl areas on many WMAs through February 15. Therefore the Moist Soil Units at Bell Slough will be closed but the Kenny Vernon Trail and Grassy Lake Road remain open for birding, hiking and exploring.
